In June, I spent a week in Davis, much of it at Sudwerk. The food was great. I recommend the sausage platter.
With only German stlye beers, I was pleased with the selection. My favorites included the Marzen, the Hefeweizen, the Pilsner, and the Maibock. The brewery also produces a few kristal versions of their beers which are very pretty, very filtered, and lacking in the flavor category.
It is fun to be able to view active fermentation in the brewery's open tuns. On a nice day it is great to sit outside on the large enclosed patio.
By far the biggest let down was the service. Servers and bartenders did not seem to grasp the fact that a group of people waiting to order costs them money. More than one time I heard from employees, 'I not ignoring you guys, I'm just very busy right now.' In the time it took to explain how busy it was our beer order could have been placed and paid for. Unless you are the ONLY customer in the place, I recommend ordering the Liter size mug due to the slow pace of service.
I look forward to tasting the Sudwerk beers on my next visit to Davis, CA.

Sudwerk has changed its menu recently; I was kind of sad to see the German things gone. Oh well, we had a couple of very good dinner salads. Unfortunately, the sevice here is a bit lame; college kid bartenders who aren't particularly interested in the patrons or the beer. But, by God, the beer is great. Excellent Marzen and Weizen, super balance, clean finish, awesome drinkability. I travel far for this stuff.

Not a bad place once you find it.Got there on an early Friday evening so it was a bit crowded but managed to find a seat at the bar. The copper brewkettles in the center of the bar area are impressive. Thay had six beers on tap and two more available in bottle only. They also offer a few choices of hard cider. Had a pint each of the Lager and Marzen. The Lager had a clean, crisp flavor and the Marzen was good but not great. The menu focuses on German faire but there seems to be something for all tastes. I went for the sausage sampler from the appetizer selections. The variety went from sweet apple chicken to a spicy cajun and all were tasty. Finished off the night with a bottle of the Dopple Bock which was so good that I bought a sixer to go.The service seemed a bit spotty. The Friday college crowd might have accounted for that.Worthy of another visit while cruising down I-80.

Once again the Marzen wasn't all that impressive, but a nice beer for casual drinkers. Maibock was light in flavor and body but good. Dobblebock had strong alcohol of course (8.0) but a nice flavor and body. The IPA was excellent! I wanted to buy a case to bring home but they didn't bottle it.

Great service with a friendly staff. Cajun salmon special was excellent, not too spicy and prepared perfectly. Marzen seemed like an ordinary macrobrew taste (amberbock), while the Irish Stout was much better; smoked, smooth body, and a cream head. Location seemed odd but worth finding. 7pm 4/18/05

I live in the same town as Sudwerks and would really love to recommend it because it has such potential. But I just can't.
Sudwerks seems like it has a lot going for it: it has a decent outdoor patio, offers live music, brews its own beer, and has serves a menu of various vaguely Germanic foods.
But the food at Sudweks is awful, the beer is nothing special, and the service leaves a lot to be desired.
If you want good German style beer and food, skip Sudwerks and drive an hour and a half south to Teske's Germania Restaurant in San Jose. Then you will see what Sudwerks could have been if the owners actually cared about food and beer.

I really like the beer at Sudwerks. And for people passing through on HWY 80 its a nice place to stop. My only complaint was that the service was poor. We went there on the cheap beer night, specifically for the cheap beers, the sign out front said it was cheap beer night even the waitress said it was cheap beer night. However, the manager (some student) decided that he didn't want to give us cheap beers. This experience left a bad taste in my mouth. Which is really too bad because I had been there before and had a really good time.

Beer was very good, but the food was just ok. The waitress was very nice and put up with a lot of crap. The manager is a weasel that tried to stiff patrons out of the advertised $1 pint night.
